BUYER BEWARE! Bard Optical made
glasses for me that were so defective as a result of poor workmanship, that they caused me to suffer two years of double vision and migraine headaches. I had numberous tests including an MRI of my brain to make sure that there was not a tumor that was causing the double vision.
Finally my orthoptist tested not only my eyes but also my glasses and found that there was more than 4 times the recommended amount of base dowm prism in the lens of my left eye and more than 5 times the recommended amount of base down prism in the lens of my right eye. This created a vertical imbalance that my brain and the muscles in my eyes could not overcome and the result was double vision and migraine headaches. The recommended standards have been set by the American National Standards Institute(ANSI) for our protection and should be followed by all optical providers.
When I contacted Diana J. Hall, owner of Bard Optical, she responded with a letter stating that the prism was normal in lenses of this nature and that Bard Optical's services met the applicable standard of care. In my opinion, their standard of care is not what it should be and is definitely outside of ANSI standards. When I had new glasses made at Illinois Eye Center, the migraine headaches and double vision disappeared. At that point there was not a doubt in my mind that it was the glasses, made by Bard Optical, that caused me years of suffering and almost $10,000 in medical costs.
Bard Optical is the assumed name of J.A.K. Enterprises, Inc, When I filed a small claims case against Diana J.Hall and Bard Optical, the case was dismissed because J.A.K. Enterprises must be named. They won on a technicality even though Bard Optical and J.A.K. Enterprises, Inc. have the same address and Diana J.Hall is the President of both companies. Bard Optical's corporate office located at 8309 N. Knoxville Ave. Peoria, Illinois, had no signage and looked like a vacant building making it next to impossible to locate them. It took almost two months to serve the papers of the lawsuit because of the difficulty of finding them.
I hope that by reading this you will be armed with the knowledge to protect yourself and the people you love.
A very positive experience.
I signed up for an appointment at Bard Optical in Champaign after seeing an ad on TV for their special -- eye exam and two pairs of glasses for $129. Being a grad student on a tight budget it was hard to pass up such a deal! I was a little reluctant after reading the reviews on this site and others, and thought about canceling the appointment, but I'm glad I didn't.
The office was easily accessible, even by bus. When I walked in the receptionist/office manager immediately greeted me and handed me some paperwork to fill out.
I told them I was there for the $129 deal, so they explained the terms of the deal to me while I waited. I was promptly seen by the optometrist. The doctor I saw was a young woman (can't remember her name) but she was very professional and friendly, and explained everything as she did the exam. I've been going to an ophthalmologist for about ten years, but I learned more about my eyes during this appointment than I ever did before. Anyway, I was impressed with the doctor.
I then picked out my glasses. The selection of eyewear in the store was very nice -- definitely something for every taste and price range. There were only about thirty pairs of glasses eligible for the $129 deal, though. But I immediately found several pairs that I liked and that fit well, so no disappointment there.
It also turned out that Bard accepted my grad student health insurance, and the optometrist explained to me that they could charge my eye exam to the insurance, saving me even more money on the glasses. I ended up upgrading one of the glasses pairs to polarized, UV-protected prescription sunglasses, and it was still less than I had planned on spending! I know that ultimately Bard will make more money off of me because of this (since they'll get the $50 for my exam from the insurance) but I was still impressed that they took the time to let me know about my options.
In short: good doctor, good customer service! I would definitely go back.
